Harley-Davidson Sportster® and Sport Motorcycles

For more than 65 years the Sportster® name has stood for Harley-Davidson’s lighter, more agile motorcycles. The family has changed a lot in recent years: today’s Sport models are powered by the liquid-cooled Revolution® Max V-Twin, while the classic air-cooled Evolution® Sportster models remain hugely popular on the used market. Whether you want your first Harley, a quick commuter or a muscle-bike with modern performance, here’s what to know.

Current Sport Models

  • Nightster® – a modern take on the classic Sportster, powered by the Revolution Max 975T engine. A low seat and approachable power make it a strong choice for newer riders as well as experienced riders who want a lighter bike.
  • Sportster S – Revolution Max 1250T power, a fat front tire and flat-track inspired style. Ride modes, cornering-enhanced safety aids and a TFT display make it one of the most capable Sportsters ever built.

Classic Evolution Sportster Models

From the late 1980s through the early 2020s, the air-cooled Evolution engine powered models like the Iron 883™, Forty-Eight®, Iron 1200™, Roadster™ and SuperLow®. These bikes are simple, easy to customize and well supported with parts, which makes them a popular buy in our used inventory. Before buying one, check the service history, tires, brakes and belt, and ask our service center about an inspection.

Is a Sportster Right for You?

  • New riders: lower weight and seat heights make Sport models easier to manage at low speeds and in parking lots.
  • Around town: quick handling and good fuel range make Sportsters great commuters around Idaho Falls.
  • Longer trips: add a windshield, a passenger seat and luggage from our parts center, or look at a cruiser or Touring model if you regularly ride long distances or two-up.
  • Adventure: if you want Revolution Max power for gravel and back roads, check out the Pan America™ adventure touring line.

Revolution Max vs. Evolution: What’s the Difference?

The liquid-cooled Revolution Max engines in current Sport models rev higher and make more horsepower, and they come with modern electronics such as ride modes and traction control. The air-cooled Evolution engine in earlier Sportster models is simpler, with a classic V-Twin feel and sound, and has decades of aftermarket support. Neither is “better”: it depends on whether you value modern performance and technology or classic simplicity. A back-to-back test ride is the quickest way to find out which you prefer.

Sportster FAQs

Is the Nightster a good beginner motorcycle?

Many riders consider the Nightster a great first Harley-Davidson thanks to its low seat and manageable weight. If you’re new to riding, the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy can help you get your skills and endorsement.

Are older Sportsters still a good buy?

A well-maintained Evolution Sportster can be an excellent, affordable motorcycle. Look for documented maintenance and use our guide to buying a used motorcycle.
